Ceramic Tile Installation – A Guide for Beginners

A newly tiled room can add beauty and class to home, but if you don’t know the basics of ceramic tile installation, it might cost a ton. And if you’re not a pro, a tile project might seem a bit daunting. With the right tools and instructions however, just about anyone can learn to do their own tiling work, without the heavy costs of a professional. Ceramic tile has the benefit of durability and well, it’s cheap. Other more expensive options ruled out; let’s have a look at doing your very own tiling project.

Tools of the Trade

The tools and materials required for a tile job are as follows:

Tile

Mortar

Grout a

Grout sealer

Leveling device

Pencil

Trowel

Tile cutter, scribe or saw

Rubber float

Gloves

Safety goggles

Get Ready to Tile

1. First off you want to have a look at the wall. Is it already tile? Is it simply painted drywall? You can tile over old tile or onto any surface, as long as it’s sturdy, dry, clean, and generally free of any loose materials.

2. Next you’ll need to get a measurement of the length and width of the area to be tiled. Multiply these numbers and you’ll get the square footage of tile you’ll need to buy. It’s a good idea to buy 10% more tile over this amount for breakage.

3. In the past the way to begin tiling is to nail a wooden board to wall to level your project and to support heavy tiles. You can’t always rely on the edge of a wall or a tub to be level, so starting one row up with a batten has been the norm. The problem is can be dangerous, resulting in burst pipes or a punctured the vapor barrier. Use TileGo to make this step simple and avoid any damage.

4. Mix just enough thinset mortar that you’ll use in 30 minutes of work – mortar will become brittle if left in the open.

5. Spread the thinset mortar with a notched trowel across the area of your first row of tiles. Use a 45 degree angle for best results. The gaps of air between the ridges in the mortal will help adhere the tile securely in place.

Get Your Tile On

6. Set the first tile into place with a twisting motion to force out any air bubbles. Place tile spacers between the tiles and keep going until you’ve reached the wall.

7. Unless you’re lucky you’ll have to cut the last tile for it to fit in place. For this you’ll need a tile scribe, tile cutter or a wet saw – it really depends on the size of your project. These cutting tools can be purchased or rented depending on your needs. If you reach an obstacle like a shower faucet or a light switch, you might use a tile nipper or a hand saw to cut the required shape in the tile.

8. Keep adding rows of tile until you’ve reached your desired height.

9. After you’ve completely tiled the desired area, let the mortar cure for at least 12 hours, or up to a day.

To Finish

10. Now that the mortar is dry, remove the spacers and mix the grout. Always wear protective gear as grout can irritate eyes and skin. Apply the grout into the spaces between the tiles using a rubber float, rubbing away the excess with a wet sponge or towel. Let this dry for 12 to 36 hours.

11. Almost done! Seal the seam of the tile area with a mildew resistant caulk to keep moisture from penetrating your new project.

There it is – you’re first tiling project done like a pro. For the beginner it seems like a formidable task, but once you get the hang of it the job can be rewarding and fun. The money you save on installing ceramic tiles yourself you can now spend on expensive fixtures.
